In June 2022 I rented a minivan and in July 2022 i rented a small car, each for roughly 11 days, and both from the company's central Liverpool location. Both times I received prompt, excellent and courteous service. My rental agreement was explained in full. We inspected each vehicle fully when signing it out and returning it. The vehicles were clean and everything worked.
I opted for automatic vehicles since I've not driven stick in the UK for about 20 years. Driving on the left side is difficult enough the first day without the additional issue of changing gears so I prefer to spend additional money on the automatic vehicle.
I also opted for the limited mileage as it was a cheaper option and I knew we'd be close to the total limit. The first time I was a mile over the limit and not charged. The second time I was about 60 miles over the 1100 miles limit and paid about 15 pounds extra. This was much cheaper than the unlimited mileage.
I had two minor issues with the minivan. First, the GPS monitor would no longer stick on the window since it was about 30C (86F). Second, the TPMS came on so I checked all tires and added more air. The problem was solved and the TPMS never came on again.
Upon returning one vehicle we looked closely at a small dent in one wheel trim but no photos had been taken by the company or me when I got the vehicle so there was no way to verify when the dent had happened. I had bought additional third-party insurance but was not charged by Green Motion. In future, I will remember to take photos when picking up and returning a vehicle.
In short, I'm happy with the service we received from Green Motion and will gladly use them again.
Overall a great experience. Car was fantastic and I was happy with the friendly service from the guys at Heathrow. Location of the office was a bit annoying to get to but the free bus to the airport is helpful. It was lucky I asked about my GPS inclusion in the office as they had originally allocated me a car without it. This then delayed me and the other customers waiting in line as they had to find me a suitable car. Staff were apologetic and advised they were fairly new. I took the full insurance option and found the cost was great in comparison to others. Will definitely use again.
DO NOT BOOK WITH GREEN MOTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND GO WITH A BETTER RENTAL COMPANY!
Upon our arrival at the airport, we realized that this hire car was located not at the airport, but a $20 cab fair to a random hotel. We waited outside in the cold for an hour to get to the window. Getting the car took a LARGE amount of time. We were not given the car that we booked. We were given an automatic car that cost us $20/per day extra. When we got the car (the only van they had) it was completely smashed up. When we tried to trade it for another car, they informed us they didn't have any vans left. We were basically stuck with it. The van had no satellite navigation and within an hour a check engine light came on.
We arrived at our destination, over two hours away and phoned them about the van. We could get NO ONE on the phone. We lost an entire next day of our vacation trying to get someone on the phone or to answer an email. That is their solution, email someone.
We had a road side service come and check the van and said it wasn't safe or driveable. Since this company is singularly owned, we couldn't just take it to the closest place, we had to take it all the way back down to London ( pay for the gas of course) and get another van.
This van didn't have the scrapes and dents, but it also didn't have central locking. We had to tie the back door hatch with a rope in the back down every time we parked the car. It was absolutely ludicrous.
We drove 1500 miles and the thing is, if we'd broken down 10 hours away, we'd still have to have the car towed back down there to get another one. What kind of company operates like this or doesn’t inform their clients that?
The complaints department is blatantly ignoring our emails and we're a week out.
SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND GO WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN GREEN MOTION! It is not worth it to deal with this budget company. Lesson learned and I hope that you can listen to our mistakes and NOT BOOK WITH GREEN MOTION
I don't normally give feedback to companies, but this time, I cannot stay quiet. I received the most appalling service from Green Motion and want other people to be aware of this and stay away from this company if they don't want to be scammed of money.
I booked a car from a third party site, checked in online to speed up the process. Bought the full insurance at the time of booking the car, it costed £50. The documents I was advised to bring with me were the drivers license and ID. I also knew I would need a credit card that is in my name, is valid and has enough funds, which is what I had.
On the day of car collection, our plane was delayed by 1 hour. We get there at midnight, tired, we still had about 1 hour drive to the destination.
I provided the requested documents at the check in, and the woman tells me my card is expired, it has to be valid for at least 6 months from the pick up date, so I won’t have a car unless I pay €250 for Green Motion full insurance, and €50 deposit. And to do that, I can then use my debit card. I was very surprised by this, because no such requirement was listed on the website where I booked the car from and all the terms and conditions only refer to the name and limit and where there is a mention on "valid", there is no specific term in months. The best thing was, Green Motion T&Cs state that you should refer to the third party T&Cs if you booked through a third party vendor.
Anyway I paid that amount, because I needed the car and at midnight, there was no other place to go to to get a different car.
That Green Motion representative then tells me how good it was that I provided my flight number, as she would have cancelled my booking altogether because I was late and charged me a late pick up fee, as if it was my fault that the plane was delayed.
Finally, I booked a small car, specifically chose a small car, and got a huge one instead. When I asked for a small one, I was laughed at and told they don't do small cars. Probably hoping that I would damage it, so they could collect more money from me.
This happened on the 28th June 2022, I formally complained to them on the 1st July. I only received 2 responses, where they did not try to come to any resolution, the last one was on the 18th June. They have stopped acknowledging my requests for the update of my complaint and I am pretty sure they are going to keep the money they scammed off me.
Furthermore, they are not part of any association, so you won't be able to take your complaint any further.
Everyone who can see this post, please be careful when booking cars online from third party vendors and please stay away from Green Motion as they are not an honest company and will try to scam you as best as they can. When I booked online, I didn't know which company I was booked with until I paid, so if you do get that, cancel immediately. Or best go through another rental company directly.
This company is terrible!! Beware!! I requested and paid for added insurance and specifically asked if everything was covered, sales person said the only thing I would be responsible for was the $200.00 deductible that was already held on my card. Upon leaving the parking lot TPMS came on, thinking was just adjusting to ambient temperature we just added some air, next day tire was flat.
Then my fault I hit the curb damaging other tire. I was mad because it was my fault and I will likely be losing 200.00. When I turned the car in, the lot attendant goes over the car on his knees looking for any damage he can find and that is not an exaggeration. I mention both the flat tire and other tire damage knowing my $200.00 is gone. Then the salesperson inside tells me the insurance does NOT cover tires and glass damage and I am billed $1200.00.
Before you rent from here just do a little google search. The third website that comes up

This company needs to be run out of business. My goal now is to make them lose more money than they took from me by doing as many bad reviews as I can.
Avoid Green Motion at all costs. This company's business model is a scam. They trick customers into claiming responsibility for damage that they are not responsible for. My wife and I traveled to Scotland for our ten year wedding anniversary (her first time to travel internationally) and after long flights we arrived at Green Motion only to be welcomed by the worst scam that I have ever fallen for. As of now we are out nearly $5,000 because of mechanical damage that they tried to pin on us. The car broke down literally 5 minutes within leaving the facility. We never received another car but were left without transportation in a foreign country and $5,000 out of our pocket. It is not worth it. Please spend the money to go with a reputable rental company, I wish I had. Additionally, they refuse to contact me. It took 7 weeks for me to get any information from them, and they refused to give me an invoice or any proof that the driver was at fault. I did finally get some documentation 2 months later after filing a complaint with the parent company, but still no one is willing to admit that they took advantage of me. It is without a doubt a scam. I am currently seeking legal advice on how to hold them accountable.
The car was in a good state. The staff was friendly and direct to the point. We have not been pestered with suggestions for additional expenses.
The bay seat and the booster seat I requested were in good enough state.
I don’t rent cars very often, but in 2022 I would expect that all cars have 2 usb charging points.
Since you call yourself Green Motion, you should propose electric cars in your roster, big and small (Renault Zoe), especially in the islands, where electric cars make total sense since there aren’t so many km to wander. You could provide charging points in strategic locations, and that’s it.
A word of caution to renters who have children. We specifically chose green motion as we needed car seats for our 2 year and 2 month old. We sent 2 emails to the office to make sure that the seats were available and in adequate state, of which we we assured that there would be no problem as I had read some bad reviews of other rental companies in the UK. When we arrived the process of getting the car was easy enough and staff seemed quite helpful. Then the car seats came out- of which I can only describe as health and safety disaster- they we covered in spore mould and dust, the seat for my 2 month old had no support cushioning and filthy. My wife checked all seats and they were all in the same condition. After refusing to take these seats staff just basically left us to 'get on with it' after spending an hour there a member of staff offered to give us his babies car seat saying that the rental company 'did not care about our situation' While thankful to him we should of have never have been left in this situation. Staff were ill equipped to deal with, when I asked for a name and number of manager in charge I was told I should just leave a review and that nothing could be done for me now. So here is my review- Green motion you left in a state which comprised the safety of my children- disgusting and left my wife in very anxious/ stressed state. I do expect someone to get back to me and I sincerely hope that you do better to take care of children needs in the future.
After my first experience with the Green Motion, I found that their business is build in an unfair and impudent manner. This is the only car enterprise which is trying to rip off their clients on anything possible. I was late for 1 hour and 30 minutes for my car collection and when I arrived, the counter staff told me that I have to pay additional €40 because they gave away my car to someone else. I mean I could understand if it actually was the case but I saw may similar cars to the one I booked were standing in the parking slot. Clearly he was lying to me and adhering to the Terms and conditions of the company in order to rip off additional €40 from my pocket. The staff was very arrogant and impolite and almost laughing on me when I tried to explain why I was late. I will never recommend Green Motion as their business is build just on trying to get as much money on anything as possible.
Rented a car from the Gatwick Airport location on May 13, 2022. Purchased insurance at time of rental online.
Upon arrival at their office I had to wait 20 minutes for service as the employees dealt with an irate customer.
Finally they started to process my rental at which time they informed me I would have to purchase their insurance at a total cost close to my 11 day rental. When I stated that I already had purchased insurance from Lloyds UK at the time of rental and showed my printed policy they stated that they did not accept 3rd party insurance and that I either purchase theirs or would have a 30,000 Pound security deposit charge on my Credit Card.
It was then that the clerk informed me that this was the same issue with the previously irate customer encountered and was the reason for the long delay in service. Knowing I had no credit card with a limit this high I was left with no choice but to purchase their overpriced insurance as they clearly stated to me that if I did not purchase or leave the outrageous security deposit they would not rent a car to me.
One month after returning home to Canada I noticed another small ($115) charge from this company on my credit card. 2 weeks later I received a 30 Pound Penalty Charge Notice from Brighton City Council for being in a bus lane. While not disputing the charge I wanted to find out what the extra Green Motion charge was for and was informed that it was an administration fee for the Penalty Charge Notice I had received. Outrageous, the administration fee was double the infraction fee.
I would recommend all potential customers stay far away from this company as while they initially appear very cheap you will end up paying double the price you initially thought. Stick with a well known reputable company.
Upon further investigation of this company after returning home I am not alone in this feeling as their negative customer experiences recorded online far outweigh the positives.
Glad I undertook a very thorough inspection of the damaged car upon rental with numerous photos and video as I dread to think what they would have charged me for damaged upon return. Very deceitful in their practices!!
I wish I have been provided some customer service, but this was not the case. Other than trying to oversell me on an insurance and trying to convince me I HAVE to buy it, nothing else useful happened during check out. Nobody cared to explain to me London Congestion Zone and related charges. Nobody mentioned I will be assigned 60 pounds administrative fee for every SINGLE penalty, nor how I can avoid the penalties to start with. They did not manage to sell me their insurance, but screwed me over with 3 administrative charges for a 2 days rental - more than 200 pounds that could have beeb easily avoided if the agent behind the desk cared about me and my business. I wish I did not have a positive experience with this company in Miami previously, so I would have avoided them. But I learned an expensive lesson and now I know who to rent from. I just hope others won't be scammed like I was with a reasonable rental rate and outrages administrative fee for something they knew well would happen as I was driving into London and I shared this with the rental agent. In the States we can purchase toll charges in advance, in LHR they did not even mentioned it to me, nor the nice fee they charge when congestion zone charges appear on my "driving record"....
I paid £139 to book a car online for a few days. When I got there, they took 90 minutes to even serve me and when they did they refused to actually give me a car unless I paid for the full premium reduction - this is despite having all the required information, available credit on my credit card etc. There were a lot of people in front of me having similar issues that I thought were just being unreasonable, but it turns out these guys are just crooks. I declined paying the extra insurance (an extra 300gbp) and they didn't give me the car and refused to refund my booking fee. They straight up stole my money and left me and my pregnant wife abandoned.
I wish this was an exaggeration. Don't be tempted by their cheaper booking fees, this company is a scam.
Positive: First of all - personnel. They are friendly, professional, helpful, English speakers. Secondly - the vehicle, it was the new car in a perfect condition.
And - check-in/checkout process was smooth.
Negative: First, upon arrival, it was not possible to reach the office by the recommended tlph number.. I was forced to seek an assistance from another companies managers (probably AVIS.. or Eurocar).. And one of them kindly helped me, saying - oh, I know the manager of Green Motion, he's my friend.. imagine..
Secondly, I was waiting for them at the airport around 40 min, what is not acceptable, considering a distance between the terminal and their office..
Great service from all the staff , particularly Mark and Ahmed. Quick and easy transaction. Picked up from airport in good time by (?) Trevor who was very professional and friendly. Also witnessed them deal with a very difficult customer who had made an error himself in booking without a credit card - they remained kind and professional throughout despite him being angry and obnoxious. I would recommend this company - less expensive than on airport hire and only 10 minutes transfer time.
We took a car in Athens, the car was not in good condition, looked all damaged and with many scratches on it...so we took a lot of pictures just in case.
We drove it for 9 days normally everything was working fine, but when we came to return it they started saying that they smell the gear and that we need to pay extra 750 euros for it!
The staff is very rude and while we were there another couple was complaining that they are charging them extra money for nothing! So it just felt that they would do anything to tell you that something is wrong with the car when you return it and charge you as much as they like as there is nothing official pricing... just what the mechanic says!
Stay away from them and rent from a descent company.
Avoid at all cost!
We have just returned from a trip to Lefkada and had the most terrible experience with Green Motion at Preveza Airport. My husband had unfortunately booked our pick up time in UK time, so when we arrived 2h later than the booking to collect our vehicle (and despite having paid in advance for it) we were told it was no longer available. Apparently in the 2h “delay” they had already reallocated the car to another booking (highly unlikely!). The only car they wanted to offer us was in the next group up, obviously requiring us to pay MORE money. Surely if I pay for a rental car in advance, but choose not to pick it up on time then that is my loss? I can’t understand a company having such Ts&Cs unless it is out to scam it’s customers. Even though it was late and we had our young son with us the lady at the desk was very rude and aggressive, threatening to call the police! Rather than reward such a terrible company with more of our business we walked next door to another rental company who were very happy to provide us with a good car at a reasonable cost. They also mentioned they get a lot of Green Motion’s unhappy customers. I’d highly recommend avoiding them at all cost. We hope to reclaim charges back from our credit card company.
tldr; SCAM - THEY CHARGED US £330 FOR A TINY INSIGNIFICANT SCRATCH THAT WE ARE PRETTY SURE WE DIDN'T CAUSE.
Really awful place and would recommend you find somewhere else to rent a car. Generally we didn't have too many issues getting the car, although it did take quite a while for us to be seen (about an hour), the person was helpful and we went along our way fine. However, when we came to return the car we were met with an apparent problem. Somehow a tiny scratch was found on the roof of our car. This scratch was so small that we did not see it on our first inspection of the car. We are 99% sure we did not cause the scratch since the car was left in the open and wasn't driven through any bushes/trees so no scratch could have been made on the roof. The manager 'Rob' was completely unhelpful with the whole situation, very inhumane in his approach and seemed like he was just taking part in their regular scam to get more money. This seems almost certainly true seeing all the other people claiming the exact same thing. I wish I had looked at the reviews earlier. I am going back to Edinburgh in September and was going to use this company again but funnily enough that's definitely not happening this time.
My wife and I live in Spain. Before our recent visit to the UK we booked a hire car at Stansted Airport, using CarJet, which had quoted a very attractive £178.26 for a week’s rental. It was only when the voucher arrived in my inbox that we realised that the vehicle would be supplied by Green Motion Rent a Car. Our previous experience of this company had not been ideal.
Green Motion’s offices are never at the airport terminal but at least a bus ride away. At Stansted they occupy a portakabin in the car park of the Novotel. Shuttle buses run on the half hour, so if you miss one you are in for a long wait. Then there’s the speed, or lack of it, at which Green Motion does the paperwork, never, in our experience, much less than an hour. SLOW MOTION would seem more appropriate. Other firms do it in ten minutes, and I refuse to believe that even Green Motion employees all suffer from underactive thyroids.
As my new driving licence had not arrived by the time we were about to leave Spain, I had to amend my booking so my wife could be sole driver the rental car. On accessing the online form I discovered that Green Motion had added a charge for their Platinum insurance package which had more than doubled cost from £178.26 to £403.00. As I had not opted for this package I removed it. I then received an email from CARJET offering me additional insurance with AXA for £24.38 to which I agreed.
When we went to pick up the car, the person we dealt with at the Green Motion office attempted to scare us into accepting the exorbitant Platinum package on the grounds that the AXA policy was only third party and inadequate to protect us from a range of hideous consequences which would probably result from our refusing to fork out yet more cash. Green Motion and Carjet appear to be singing from different hymn sheets. This may be simple incompetence. Or not.
The paperwork process was drawn out further by the fact that ‘our’ Green Motion rep became involved in a dispute between two of her colleagues and an indignant customer complaining about damage he was alleged have caused to his rental car. Warning bells ought to have begun to sound, but by this time all we could think of was to escape and begin our long-delayed journey.
Our return flight to Spain was scheduled to leave at 8.05 a.m. which meant that we needed to be at the airport for 6.00 am at the latest. Every other car rental firm we have dealt with has an out of hours key drop facility The Green Motion office opens at 6.00 am and the return guide states ‘We do not accept out of hours returns. You remain responsible for the vehicle until it can be checked by a member of staff’. Online reviews speak of customers being fined exorbitantly for being unable to comply with this rule. As we could not risk missing our flight, we were obliged to return our vehicle a day early, which cost us a night’s hotel accommodation and two taxi rides.
We had made only one journey in the rental car, which had spent the rest of the week in secure off-road parking. When we returned the vehicle the GM vehicle inspector was all smiles until we refused to accept responsibility for an almost invisible scratch he immediately claimed to have found on a wheel trim. This, he said, would cost us £160.00. (I wonder how many customers they charge for the same scratch). At this point the charming Green Motion rep barked at me ‘You will not be allowed to rent from Green Motion again. (As if!) The fuel is OK. You can go and get the shuttle’. In fact, when I later looked at my credit card statement it was clear that Green Motion had charged an extra £50.00 for fuel and not refunded the £35.00 they owed me for unused pre-paid fuel. To put it another way: We had used £15.00 worth of petrol and they tried to charge £85.00.
A recent Guardian Money feature detailed some of the large number of customers who have been ‘caught’ by Green Motion’s practice of charging huge bills, sometimes of £1,000 or more, for minor scratches and blemishes. The article comments that ‘firms selling car hire too cheaply will lose money if you don’t take their insurance, so will try to recover their profit by ‘finding’ scratches and damage that are billed to you at extortionate rates.’ There are reports of inspectors heading straight to ‘damage’ located in such inaccessible places as under the car or behind bumpers. The Guardian article reveals that Green Motion vehicle inpectors’ remuneration includes a bonus scheme and it is crystal clear that Green Motion charges for ‘damage’ on an industrial scale.
Green Motion’s prices may appear to be low, but you can easily end up paying vastly more than if you rented from a reputable company such as Avis or Alamo with premises conveniently in the airport complex or the car rental village. Beware!
I booked a car with Green Motion at London Stansted using Ryanair car hire. I then filled in the pre registration direct with them, after which I received an e mail stating they could not process the rental as my occupation was '' delivery driver'' The payment had already left my account and when I asked for a refund they replied it was not for them to pay , I had to claim through the broker ( Ryanair ). What appalling service ! I have booked with Green Motion many times over the years but never again. How they determine a delivery driver is not suitable to rent a car is a mystery. I checked various reviews to see if anyone else had similar problems and I was amazed to see the number of negative messages about this company. Simple thing is don't use them , there are plenty of better options
I cannot believe this company is still in business. Everything about the organization is a rip off. We booked a package deal online through Priceline and included insurance. Well, we were told we needed $300k in liability insurance which is crazy, what was the purpose of me paying for insurance. Then, we were told we would be charged for three days when we only had the car for two full days. Now, let’s talk about the car. The car was brought to us with the traction light on which is unacceptable, the car had visible damages to the bumper, the seats and the roof of the car was filthy. I cannot believe that this company didn’t get the car fix, what’s the purpose of insurance when you’re not going to get the car fix. I will post pictures and videos of this car. This is the worst rental car I’ve ever been too. DO NOT RENT HERE!!! This company don’t deserve any stars.
